SYNOPSIS:

Ten years have passed since "The Great Tokyo Earthquake", a natural disaster that sank more than 70% of Tokyo into the ocean. Igarashi Ganta is a 14-year-old high school student in Nagano Prefecture. Ganta is a survivor of the earthquake, but he has no memory of the disaster and simply wishes to live a normal life. Everything changed one day when a mysterious man covered in blood appeared in his classroom window. "The Red Man" kills Ganta's classmates, but strangely lets him live and thrusts a crimson crystal into his chest. Ganta's life goes from bad to worse when he is convicted of the gruesome murders and sentenced to death in "Deadman Wonderland."

Deadman Wonderland (DW) is Japan's only prison run by a private company, built after the earthquake as a tourist attraction to help revive Tokyo. The prisoners serve as staff and entertainment for the visitors, as well as a secret game called "Carnival Corpse", which is made with the contribution of private donors who pay to watch the fighting between Deadman. Due to the heinous nature of Ganta's crime, he is given "the death penalty" from DW, which is a metal necklace that slowly injects poison into his body. The only way to delay its execution is to consume a special antidote, similar to a candy, every three days. Shortly after arriving at the prison, Ganta meets a mysterious girl named Shiro,

In his quest to profess his innocence and obtain revenge, Ganta becomes obsessed with finding the "Red Man", who may be somewhere within the prison. In the course of his search, Ganta begins to develop an uncanny ability to control his blood. He soon discovers a secret level under the prison where the "Deadman" live. These, like Ganta, can control their blood and use it as a weapon. Ganta is forced to participate in secret fighting tournaments against other Deadmans, in which anonymous people pay large sums of money to witness them. The winner receives a large sum of Cast Points, which is the Deadman Wonderland coin. The loser, if he survives the combat, loses a part of his body selected by a slot machine,

While the threat of violence is constant in the prison, most inmates enjoy a lot of freedom within Deadman Wonderland. With the use of Cast Points, prisoners can purchase a wide variety of items from ordinary meals, to luxury furniture for their rooms and even reductions in their sentences. Those sentenced to death also use Delivery Points to purchase their life-saving sweets.

Score: 10/10
